In vitro Antibacterial study of methanolic extract of Azadirachta indica (Neem) against
Xanthomonas citri

Ankita Sharma and Sapan Patel

The main aim of present study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of methanolic extract of Azadirachta indica against Xanthomonas citri on different level of concentration. The plant was selected on the basis of their reported medicinal uses. Each part of A. indica contains various pharmacological active substances against many diseases. In India most of the plant pathogenic diseases were caused by bacteria. X. citri is a plant pathogenic bacteria, severely affects citrus crop worldwide. In our lab work some antibacterial effective results have observed by the use of methanolic extract of A. indica. The results of inhibitory activity of the methanolic extract of A. indica compare with the standard antibiotic Kanamycin. The zone of inhibition of extract of A. indica at the concentration of 200 µg/ml was 20 mm (leaves) and the zone of inhibition of the standard antibiotic Kanamycin was 32mm. Hence, the result of A. indica (leaves) indicated that it may be used for treating plant diseases as natural bactericides

Campesterol elicitation in Blumea lacera (Burm.f.) DC. cell culture using Salicylic acid and Aspergillus niger

P. Patade, V. D. Mendhulkar and M. Vakil

Blumea lacera is a medicinal plant which has enormous medicinal applications. Campesterol is one of the major constituent found in this plant. Salicylic acid and Aspergillus niger were used as chemical and fungal elicitor respectively in cultured cells of Blumea lacera to enhance the production of campesterol. The High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed that 0.5 mM salicylic acid treated cell suspension culture for 24 hr showed 26 fold increase (1.877 mg/g) where as 3.9 fold increase (0.406 mg/g) in campesterol content was observed in cell culture treated with 2 ml of Aspergillus niger elicitor for 4 days duration. The results shows that the concentration, type of elicitor and treatment duration plays crucial role for elicitation of campesterol in studied plant system.

Phytochemical screening and GC-MS analysis of Mollugo cerviana (L.)

P. Padmapriya and S. Maneemegalai

The plant species Mollugo cerviana contains number of medicinally important compounds. The Preliminary Phytochemical screening was performed using standard procedures with the extracts of the whole plant. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) analysis of the extract was carried out to further screen the compounds responsible for its medicinal activity. The study reveals the presence of number of Phenolic compounds including Flavonoids, terpenoids, fatty acids, and alkaloids. To further identify the specific compounds responsible for wound healing and anti-inflammatory activity, the flavonoid fraction of the extract was separated using column chromatography and GC-MS study was performed with that fraction. The overall study reveals the presence of Benzofurans, Fatty acids (lauric acid and capric acid, myristic acid), Phenolics (Guaiacol, 4-vinylphenol, 4-ethenyl-2-methoxy-phenol), Isochiapin B, Neophytadiene, Trifluoro acetoxy hexadecan, 9- Eicosene besides terpenoids and steroids.

Evaluation of Skeletal Muscle Relaxant Activity of Ethanolic Extract of Lantana Camara Linn.

Lincy Josep, Mathew George, Anmol Sharma, Naina Sara Sabu

The objective of present study was to evaluate the effect of the ethanolic extracts of lantana camara leaves in experimental animals for skeletal muscle relaxant activity. Ethanolic extract of lanata camara linn. Subjected to preliminary qualitative phtyochemical investigation and acute oral toxicity study for the test extract of the plant was carried out using OECD guidelines. The skeletal muscle relaxant activity of the ethanolic extract of the drug (60mg/kg) was evaluated in rats using rota-rod apparatus. The diazepam was taken as the standard drug and results obtained after Ethanolic extract of lanata camara linn administration was compared with the standard drug and results obtained were significant up to 2 hr study as P‹ 0.01. The result suggest that the Ethanolic extract of lanata camara linn of herbal origin has significant skeletal muscle activity as reflected by the parameter investigated.
